The innuendoes and suggestions made concerning
anyone who advises caution regarding forming your own church
school are appalling. The one most frequently advanced is that since obviously
anyone can be their own cover, church school directors who
advise caution regarding this must be solely motivated or
primarily motivated by $$$$$.
This is a ridiculous assertion, fallacious, not based on the
reality of what many home educators need and want, and is
further denigrating and destructive and downright hurtful to
church school directors, some of whom have worked heart and soul
to provide a way for people to home educate in this state.
There are many, many "unseen" services provided by some church
school directors, including hours and hours in telephone calls,
front line battles with truant officers who want to overstep
their boundaries, and hours writing, thinking, and addressing
home educator concerns that include conferences with lawyers,
mobilizing support efforts, and providing seminars and endless
other tasks.
Although the fees can vary widely depending on the services and
activities provided, there are many church schools offering
covering for yearly fees that barely cover their own expenses
through the year. Long distance phone calls are expensive,
copies of information do not come cheap, maintaining web sites,
disseminating information, watching legislative moves, traveling
from city to city to encourage and enroll others, researching
may not show in the "services" provided to individual families,
but they are indeed services to all of us. I resent this kind of
insinuation to the depths of my soul. It is just plain wrong.
Further, many home educators not only NEED but WANT and
frequently DO CALL ON those directors for individualized help in
designing their home education to fit their family, especially
at the beginning.
To see the dedicated church school directors in this state
characterized and defamed as motivated by money simply because
they responsibly urge caution should at the very
least lead you to examine the actions of all concerned
carefully.
